Row 14

A few weeks ago, a new restaurant opened on the first floor of our building: Row 14. Owned by a long-time Boulder restauranteur, Row 14′s focus is fresh, local , American cuisine, backed by a focused and diverse wine glass and bottle list. We actually went to opening night, a quiet affair on a Tuesday night. Food was a solid B, but service was good and attentive. I had the double-cut pork, which was very nice, and we shared a delicious bottle of 2008 J.K. Carriere Oregon Pinot Noir. Our only disappointment was no chocolate dessert, although they assured us it would be on the menu in the next few days. We’re in a part of town that’s just a few blocks from many nice restaurants, but like anything, it’s great to have one right here in our...

Denver Restaurant Week 2011: Mizuna, Argyll, Colterra

Many cities have a week or two during the year where local restaurants offer a prix fixe three-course menu for a locked price, sometimes for charity, sometimes for local marketing exposure. Denver Restaurant Week includes 14 days of $52.80 three-course meals for two, a heck of a deal at some of the more expensive places in town. We have already eaten at a nice collection of restaurants around the city, but like any place with good restaurants, there are always more to try. We picked three and made reservations in January, and over the last two weekends we visited Mizuna, Argyll, and Colterra. Mizuna http://mizunadenver.com/ Mizuna is one of those “must try” restaurants that’s not too far away, but not something we can walk to from our condo, so...

Cabo San Lucas

We were fortunate to tag along with some family friends to a house they rented at Cabo San Lucas a couple weekends ago. You can find a little slideshow on our photos page, as well as a video below.

Super Bowl Ads 2011: Our favorites, forgettables, and what the hecks

We were pleased as punch as anyone to see the Green Bay Packers defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 in Super Bowl XLV. As Seattle Seahawks fans, we have long memories of Super Bowl XL, when the referees made several bad calls, handing Pittsburgh victory from the jaws of defeat. But since we can’t change that, and knowing the Seahawks won’t be back to the Super Bowl anytime soon, we instead root for whoever is playing against Pittsburgh. But enough about the game – let’s talk ads. Super Bowl ads are a tradition in themselves, and Nora and I spent several minutes on the drive home recapping what we liked and what we didn’t. Here’s our thoughts: Favorites Volkswagen: The Force This video is the long version, which, in our opinion,...

Christmas Break 2010

We stayed in Denver for Christmas this year, and were fortunate to be visited by Mom and Darren (my folks) for Christmas, followed by David and Jennifer for New Year’s. Living in the city, there was no shortage of things to do. Over the course of a week with Mom and Darren we : Walked around the Lower Platte neighborhood, with breakfast at Mona’s, followed by visiting the REI flagship store in the historical Denver Tramway building, and then Savory Spice Shop. Saw the lights at the Denver City and County building, always a brilliant display. This year maybe a bit too gaudy. Got snowed on! We had a mild blizzard in Denver, and while it was only 5-8 inches, it really came down fast. Lunch at Euclid Hall, Denver’s best foodie pub. Shopped at...

New Dining Table

Dining tables have always been a struggle for us. The only dining table we owned was an old Ikea table that Nora picked up shortly after college. It worked fine for her apartment in Tacoma, and later our apartment in Renton, but it was just too big for our house in Renton, and with a great island in the kitchen to eat at, why get a table? About this time of year, you start to realize why – holidays. Great winter meals are best shared with family at a real dining table, not a kitchen bar. But we managed to get by, mostly by being out of town. And so when we moved to Denver, we sold the old table, and left with nothing like it in the moving truck. In a way, getting our new dining table has been almost half a decade in the works. But we’re thrilled to...

The blog is back!

June 2008, that’s when we last made a post to our blog. Then, in the storm of buying our house, the remodel, and the inevitability of it being last on the list, we just never got around to it. Eventually we pulled down the site. But with a little spare time, and a new blogging engine, we are finally back. Every blog needs to have a first post, so we’ll keep this short and sweet: we hope you visit often, subscribe to our feed, and enjoy our little stories.
